British Council: Loans

Asked by Wendy MortonConservativeForeign, Commonwealth and Development OfficeTabled Answered 3 February 2025UIN 27277

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, whether he has had discussions with the Chancellor of the Exchequer on restructuring the repayment terms for British Council loans owed to the Government.

Answered by Mr Hamish Falconer

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is working closely with the British Council and HM Treasury on this issue.

The loan was made on commercial terms to ensure compliance with the UK subsidy control regime. The Government remains committed to recovering the loan when the British Council's finances allow.
