Unitary Councils: Elections

Asked by Kevin HollinrakeConservativeMinistry of Housing, Communities and Local GovernmentTabled Answered 15 September 2025UIN 74954

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, whether new unitary councils will be elected (a) all-out and (b) by thirds.

Answered by Alison McGovern

Our expectation is to provide for whole council elections, consistent with the approach taken in previous unitarisations where new councils were established under the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007.
