Submarines: Nuclear Weapons

Asked by Mike WoodConservativeMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 16 September 2025UIN 75999

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to page 6 of the Strategic Defence Review 2025, published in June 2025, what his Department’s definition is of a sovereign warhead.

Answered by Luke Pollard

The requirements, design, manufacture and maintenance of our nuclear warheads are independent to the UK. We utilise certain U.S. non-nuclear components, including the aeroshell, to remain compatible with the Trident missile. This is consistent with our obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
