Civil Partnerships and Marriage

Asked by Olly GloverLiberal DemocratWomen and EqualitiesTabled Answered 11 March 2026UIN 908224

The question

To ask the Minister for Women and Equalities, what discussions she has had with Cabinet colleagues on conversion between civil partnership and marriage.

Answered by Olivia Bailey

In 2019, when civil partnerships were made available for opposite-sex couples in England and Wales, the Government ran a public consultation on the future of conversion rights between marriage and civil partnerships for both opposite-sex and same-sex couples in England and Wales. We recognise the importance of people being able to formalise their relationships in the way they want, with the person they love. We are giving this matter careful consideration and will update the House in due course.
