To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what steps her department is taking to support improvements at Surrey Police, in the context of the recent report by HMICFRS.

His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) assesses the operational performance of forces in England and Wales. HMICFRS last published a Police Effectiveness Efficiency and Legitimacy inspection (PEEL) report for Surrey Police on 30th April 2026.
The Government set out its commitment to taking a more active leadership role in policing in the Police Reform White Paper, published in January. This includes the introduction of a new Policing Performance System to identify and support improvements within all forces (including Surrey Police), with appropriate mechanisms for earlier support and intervention where performance is declining or of concern, as well as identifying areas of good practice. These mechanisms range from self-access resources such as the Support Toolkit, increased support from the College of Policing and dedicated Subject Matter Experts, to the embedding of ‘turnaround teams’.
The Policing Performance System represents a strengthened, system-wide approach to assessing, supporting, and improving police performance. It will introduce clearer, more structured pathways for support and intervention from the Home Office and College of Policing.
