Gig Economy: Conditions of Employment

Asked by Jim ShannonDemocratic Unionist PartyDepartment for Business and TradeTabled Answered 27 May 2026UIN 1931

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, what steps he is taking to ensure compliance with employment rights in the gig economy.

Answered by Kate Dearden

The government established the Fair Work Agency (FWA) in April 2026, which will deliver a much-needed upgrade to employment rights enforcement. It brings enforcement functions of three predecessor bodies together into one place, so employment rights are enforced more effectively and efficiently. In time, it will also enforce additional rights.

All employers must comply with their legal obligations to ensure that their staff receive the rights they are entitled to, including those in the gig economy.
