The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what estimate he has made of the cost to the public purse of the parliamentary by-election in Makerfield; what proportion of that cost will be met by (a) central Government, (b) the relevant local authority and (c) any other public body; and whether he plans to provide additional financial support to the local authority to cover the costs associated with administering the by-election.

The costs necessary for the efficient and effective running of UK parliamentary elections are met from the Consolidated Fund. The estimated cost of the parliamentary by-election in Makerfield is set out in the relevant schedule of The Parliamentary Elections (Returning Officers’ Charges) Order 2024 which can be found here.

Any additional expenditure that may be necessary for the efficient and effective running of the by-election can be considered on a case-by-case basis as part of existing processes.
