Prison Officers: Crimes of Violence
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many prison officers were physically assaulted by prisoners in England and Wales in each month between July 2024 and April 2026.
Answered by Jake Richards
The requested information could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.
Information on assaults on staff in prisons in England and Wales is published quarterly through the Ministry of Justice’s Safety in Custody statistics. The latest publication, covering the period up to December 2025, can be found here: Safety in custody: quarterly update to December 2025 - GOV.UK.
These statistics cover incidents of assault on all staff, are not limited to prison officers, and include all assault incidents, not solely those in which a prisoner was the assailant.
Data for periods beyond December 2025 are not yet published and cannot be provided as this would give an early indication of future Official Statistics.
