To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many staff at HM Prison and Probation Service have currently been suspended with pay for more than one year.

As of 21 May 2026, there were 51 staff in His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) who have been suspended with pay for more than one year. These figures include staff who have been continuously suspended on pay since before 21 May 2025. As at the end of April, the HMPPS headcount for payroll staff was 69,537. The 51 members of staff referred to equates to 0.07% of the HMPPS workforce.
HMPPS uses suspension on full pay as a precautionary measure to protect investigations and operational integrity. More complex or criminal cases can take longer to resolve, which can result in a small number of longer-term suspensions.
All cases are kept under regular review and progressed in line with established conduct and discipline processes.
