SS Tilawa

Asked by Bob BlackmanConservativeDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 2 June 2026UIN 3746

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to the Answer of 20 May 2026 to Question 1670 on SS Tilawa, if she will make a designation to protect the wreck of the SS Tilawa.

Answered by Keir Mather

Under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973, the Secretary of State for Transport may make designations prohibiting unauthorised access to a wreck provided it lies within the UK Exclusive Economic Zone. No similar powers are available for wrecks, such as the SS Tilawa, which lie in international waters.
