Papua: Human Rights
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, whether her Department has made representations supporting a visit to West Papua by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Answered by Seema Malhotra
The UK monitors the human rights situation in Papua regularly. We are concerned about the recent increase in violence in Papua including the fatalities across Central Papua. I visited Indonesia in February and underlined the importance the UK attaches to human rights and raised Papua directly with the Vice Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno. We continue to support a visit by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to the region. We have encouraged both parties to agree dates.
The UK will continue to engage with Indonesia at senior levels on Papua and encourage approaches that are consistent with international standards and the safeguarding of human rights.
