The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps his Department is taking to support research into prostate cancer.

The Department invests approximately £1.8 billion each year in research through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Cancer is a major area of NIHR spending at £141.6 million in 2024/25, reflecting its high priority. The Department’s investment in the NIHR facilitates the direct funding of research projects through NIHR programmes, support for researchers to develop and conduct research through NIHR translational infrastructure, and a workforce to deliver research on behalf of other funders through NIHR research delivery infrastructure.
A significant example is the Government and Prostate Cancer UK’s £42 million TRANSFORM screening trial to find the best way to screen men for prostate cancer to find it before it becomes advanced and harder to treat. On 2 June 2026, the Government announced up to £18 million in new funding from the NIHR to expand the TRANSFORM trial, enabling all eligible Black men to be invited to Stage 2 of the trial.
The NIHR continues to welcome high quality applications for research into any aspect of human health and care, including prostate cancer. These applications are subject to peer review and judged in open competition, with awards being made on the basis of the importance of the topic to the public and health and care services, value for money, and scientific quality.
