Sweden: Military Aircraft
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, if he will make an assessment of the potential impact of the Swedish fighter jet deal on defence jobs in (i) the UK and (ii) Lancashire.
Answered by Luke Pollard
The Sweden-led export of Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine will provide Ukrainian forces with modern, agile, and highly capable multirole air combat platforms. It also represents a step change in defence industrial cooperation. This initiative will strengthen both economic and military resilience by reinforcing international supply chains and creating opportunities for future innovation. At least 50 UK-based companies—from Saab UK in Fareham to Leonardo UK in Edinburgh—are expected to be involved in the deal, supporting more than 5,000 UK jobs. Lancashire will also benefit from the investment, as local companies contribute to Gripen airframe and installation activity.
