Electricity: Housing and Industry

Asked by Chris BlooreLabourDepartment for Energy Security and Net ZeroTabled Answered 8 June 2026UIN 4752

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what steps he is taking to ensure the publication of regional substation capacity data to support demand-side connections for housing and industry.

Answered by Michael Shanks

DESNZ is working closely with Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to improve demand-side connections, including through Ofgem’s End-to-End Review in which the regulator has committed to publishing a Demand Capacity Register.

Alongside this, the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority is developing a national infrastructure spatial platform bringing together strategies, data and AI tools to identify local infrastructure needs and constraints, using distribution network operator data on substation capacity, to support housing, industrial growth and place-based infrastructure investment decisions.
