Cybersecurity: West Mercia Police
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what steps her Department is taking to increase the number of specialist cyber investigators within West Mercia Police.
Answered by Sarah Jones
Home Office provides additional funding to all tiers of policing to investigate and respond to the harm of cyber crime. At the local tier, this funding is further supplemented by ‘match funding’ from the Police and Crime Commissioners, which maintains a cyber crime unit in every force. This includes West Mercia Police.
At the regional level, the Home Office fund the network of Regional Cyber Crime Units to provide access to specialist capabilities, including in the Regional Organised Crime Unit for the West Midlands. The ROCU supports West Mercia police force with more complex or serious cyber crime.
The Home Office also funds the Economic and Cyber Crime Academy, based in the City of London, which ensures that every officer in a local cyber crime team has the specialist expertise to conduct cyber crime investigations.
We are working with the law enforcement cyber crime network to continue to find ways to transform, innovate, and use technology to find efficiencies that improve outcomes for cyber policing.
