To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what assessment his Department has made of the potential role of greenhouse gas removal projects in meeting the UK’s net zero targets.

Greenhouse Gas Removals (GGRs) are an important part of the UK’s efforts to tackle climate change, as recognised by a range of independent institutions, such as the Climate Change Committee. GGR technologies will be important for reaching net zero – balancing residual emissions from hard-to-decarbonise sectors while providing new economic opportunities.
On 29 October 2025 the Carbon Budgets and Growth Delivery Plan was published, setting out how the UK will continue to reduce emissions in a way that lowers bills and secures good jobs, in line with the 2008 Climate Change Act. It details the projected emissions savings from each policy and proposal which demonstrates that this package will enable the UK to reduce its carbon emissions to the level required by Carbon Budget 6. In this plan, the government presents a deployment assumption of 0.7Mtpa of engineered removals by 2030, increasing to 21.8Mtpa by 2035.
