Solar Power: National Grid

Asked by Edward MorelloLiberal DemocratDepartment for Energy Security and Net ZeroTabled Answered 8 June 2026UIN 5204

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, whether his Department plans to introduce a minimum export value for rooftop solar energy exported to the grid.

Answered by Michael Shanks

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a market-led mechanism in which energy suppliers, not government, set both tariff levels and structure. This is designed to encourage innovation and competition in the sector and minimise costs to consumers.

The Government has recently committed to consult on changes to make it quicker and simpler for generators to be paid for the electricity they export to the grid.
