Strait of Hormuz

Asked by Jeff SmithLabourMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 1 June 2026UIN 900125

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what steps he is taking to help re-establish freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Answered by Al Carns

The UK is playing a leading role with France to secure the Strait of Hormuz through a multinational military mission of over 40 nations.

HMS DRAGON is in the region. I was in Gibraltar the Friday before last, when RFA LYME BAY left, ready to support with mine-clearing operations when conditions allow.

The UK will also deploy cutting-edge counter drone systems, and Typhoon jets as part of a future defensive mission to secure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
