Political Parties: Finance

Asked by Paul HolmesConservativeMinistry of Housing, Communities and Local GovernmentTabled Answered 8 June 2026UIN 5431

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, with reference to the Answer of 8 April 2026 to Question 123199 on Political Parties: Finance, what is the threshold at which hon. Members will be required to undertake due diligence on political donations made to them in their capacity as a Member of Parliament; what role will the (a) Electoral Commission, (b) House of Commons Registrar and (c) Parliamentary Standards Commissioner have in the new due diligence regime; and whether Hon Members will be required to retain the due diligence records for six years.

Answered by Samantha Dixon

The Know Your Donor regime will introduce new risk-based due diligence checks on significant political donations. These rules will apply across the electoral regime, which includes members of the House of Commons and holders of relevant elected office as set out in Schedule 7 of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act.

All recipients of political donations will need to carry out enhanced Know Your Donor due diligence checks on donations over £11,180.

The regime will be implemented alongside statutory guidance issued by the Electoral Commission. The Department does not intend to issue separate guidance.

Recipients in scope will be required to retain records of each risk assessment and supporting information for at least six years.
