To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of the new stations on the South Wales Mainline on congestion on the M4 in South Wales around the Brynglas tunnels.

The Welsh Government’s South-East Wales Transport Commission (SEWTC) report, published in November 2020, recommended a network of public transport alternatives to tackle congestion on the M4 in south-east Wales. The UK Government’s Union Connectivity Review endorsed these recommendations in full in 2021.
In February 2026 the Prime Minister made a generational commitment to end historic underinvestment in Welsh railways. This included building the six new South Wales Main Line stations recommended by the SEWTC report, creating the additional rail capacity needed to help reduce motorway traffic as set out in that report.
