The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, with reference to her Department’s press release entitled Regional funding to train next generation of construction workers, published on 20 May 2026, whether local authorities and mayoral authorities will have a role in determining regional construction skills priorities under the scheme.

The department is keen to harness the strengths of a devolved approach, gaining from local insight and opportunities, and the benefits and flexibility of devolved authority. We have worked closely with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and individual Mayoral Strategic Authorities (MSAs) to integrate the construction skills package into the devolved approach, using Integrated Settlements and Section 31 Grants. As part of this, we have set out overarching aims of increasing the volume and quality of the skilled construction workforce, whilst also developing guidance and allowing flexibility to national policy parameters to enable MSAs to respond to local needs and labour market demands. We encourage MSAs to develop innovative approaches and leverage regional relationships and opportunities to deliver the best results.
