Driving Licences: Health

Asked by James McMurdockIndependentDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 15 June 2026UIN 7250

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment she has made of the effectiveness of the self-declaration system for assessing the medical fitness of drivers renewing a car driving licence.

Answered by Simon Lightwood

The Government keeps the arrangements for assessing the medical fitness of drivers under review, including the current self-declaration process for drivers renewing a car driving licence.

Under the current system, drivers are required by law to notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency of any medical condition that may affect their ability to drive safely, and licensing decisions are taken in line with the relevant medical standards. The Government continues to consider policy options in this area to ensure the arrangements remain appropriate.
