Roads: Accidents
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, how many road traffic collisions in each of the last five years involved a driver whose eyesight was a contributory factor.
Answered by Lilian Greenwood
Data on road injury collisions in Great Britain is reported by the police via a system known as STATS19. Reporting officers can assign up to 6 factors which in their opinion may have contributed to the collision occurring, including where ‘driver or rider had uncorrected or defective eyesight’.
The number of collisions in Great Britain with the factor ‘driver or rider had uncorrected or defective eyesight’ assigned in each of the last 5 years for which figures are available are shown in the table below.
Year | Number of collisions |
2020 | 165 |
2021 | 164 |
2022 | 176 |
2023 | 195 |
2024 | 274 |
