NHS: Managers
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how many Very Senior Managers were employed by NHS organisations in England in each of the last five years.
Answered by Karin Smyth
The Department and NHS England publish information on the number of Very Senior Managers working in National Health Service organisations each year as part of evidence for the Senior Salaries Review Body. The latest evidence, for the 2026/27 pay round, can be found at the following link:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dhsc-evidence-for-the-ssrb-pay-round-2026-to-2027
The ‘Workforce Numbers’ section within chapter three on ‘Very Senior Manager Pay’ presents a range of information on Very Senior Managers including a timeseries of numbers from 2019 to 2025. This evidence is supported by a data pack which can be found at the same link with more detailed information on Very Senior Manager numbers.
