Property Development
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what assessment he has made of the implications for his policies of the Home Builders Federation publication, Rising costs making development unviable across swathes of the country as home building continues to fall, published on 6 May 2026.
Answered by Matthew Pennycook
My Department has made no specific assessment of the publication in question.
We recognise that viability challenges are affecting development projects across the country, with pressures particularly acute in some housing markets, and that the Middle East conflict has had a significant effect on both supply and demand in the housing market.
We continue to explore ways in which we might reduce development risk and transaction costs, in line with the government’s wider objectives.
