Local Government: Codes of Practice

Asked by Sir James CleverlyConservativeMinistry of Housing, Communities and Local GovernmentTabled Answered 16 June 2026UIN 7462

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what the timetable is for the implementation of his Department’s proposed reforms to the local government code of conduct.

Answered by Alison McGovern

The Government Response to the ‘Strengthening the standards and conduct framework for local authorities in England’ consultation, published 11 November 2025, states our intention to introduce legislation for a range of measures to create a clearer and consistently applied conduct system that will help local elected members to hold themselves and their colleagues to account.

We will legislate when parliamentary time allows.
