Animal Welfare: Commonwealth
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps she is taking with her Commonwealth counterparts to help improve animal welfare.
Answered by Stephen Morgan
As set out in this Government’s Animal Welfare Strategy, Defra is committed to working collaboratively in international fora, including with Commonwealth countries, to champion the importance of high standards of animal welfare and promote best practice.
Defra officials also work collaboratively with international partners bilaterally to promote improvements in animal welfare, including through our free trade agreements with Commonwealth partners such as Australia, New Zealand and India, which include provisions that support cooperation on animal welfare.
