Driverless Vehicles: Highway Code

Asked by Mr Andrew SnowdenConservativeDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 16 June 2026UIN 7674

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether she plans to review the Highway Code adjusted for the presence of driverless cars.

Answered by Simon Lightwood

Since 2022, The Highway Code has included provisions relating to automated vehicles.

The Department keeps the Highway Code under regular review to ensure it remains up to date with developments in automated vehicle technology. As automated vehicle legislation is implemented and the use of such vehicles becomes more widespread, the Code will be updated where necessary to reflect new requirements, support safe use, and provide clarity for all road users.
