AWE: Expenditure

Asked by Ben Obese-JectyConservativeMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 15 June 2026UIN 7782

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to the Committee of Public Accounts Fifth Report of Session 2026-27 (HC95), paragraph 2, for what reason did his Department classify historic expenditure by the Atomic Weapons Establishment as spending that had resulted in it developing infrastructure.

Answered by Luke Pollard

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) classifies historic expenditure by AWE as spending on infrastructure development as these costs relate to assets under construction. These include buildings, infrastructure and equipment, managed by AWE but owned and capitalised by the MOD in accordance with accounting standards.
