Political Parties: Advertising
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what plans he has to ban foreign-funded political advertising targeted at UK voters.
Answered by Samantha Dixon
The Government recognises the risk posed by foreign interference in British politics, including through online political advertising, and shares the concern that our democratic processes must be safeguarded in a proportionate way.
Philip Rycroft, in his Independent Review into Countering Foreign Financial Influence and Interference in UK Politics, made a recommendation to tighten the regulation of online political advertising, by banning foreign-funded adverts outright. The Government is carefully considering all recommendations and will issue a full response in due course.
