Social Housing: VAT

Asked by Sir James CleverlyConservativeMinistry of Housing, Communities and Local GovernmentTabled Answered 17 June 2026UIN 8093

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what assessment his Department has made of the impact of VAT on cladding repairs on the overall cost of remediation for social housing providers.

Answered by Samantha Dixon

The VAT treatment for cladding remediation has not changed. Cladding remediation remains subject to the standard rate of VAT, unless it is classified as snagging work tied directly to the terms of the original construction contract, in which case it may be zero-rated, subject to certain criteria being met.

Last July, we announced a joint plan with social landlords and regulators that will accelerate remediation of social housing in England.

At the heart of the joint plan is a commitment by the Government to over £1 billion of new investment to give social landlords equal access to government remediation schemes for the first time.
