Electric Cables and Telecommunications Cables: Seas and Oceans

Asked by Luke TaylorLiberal DemocratMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 17 June 2026UIN 8235

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what steps he is taking with European allies to protect underwater sea cables from Russian interference.

Answered by Louise Sandher-Jones

We are working closely with our European allies to respond to threats against our collective critical national infrastructure.

The Ministry of Defence has launched the Atlantic Bastion programme which will create an advanced hybrid naval force. It has also provided an extra £100 million for vital P8 submarine-hunting aircraft and is working closely with NATO Allies, including Norway, to deliver the Lunna House agreement, which will deliver a combined fleet of new submarine-hunting frigates and uncrewed systems.
