Data Centres: Electricity

Asked by Euan StainbankLabourDepartment for Energy Security and Net ZeroTabled Answered 17 June 2026UIN 8370

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what proportion of electricity demand connection applications in the National Energy System Operator queue are attributable to data centres.

Answered by Michael Shanks

Data supplied by the National Energy System Operator shows around 60GW of capacity allocated to data centres in the transmission queue. This represents around three quarters of the total demand connections queue, at transmission level.

Government recently consulted on measures to manage oversubscription of data centre connections and will publish its response in due course.
