To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, if he will make an assessment of the potential benefits to people in a) Newcastle-under-Lyme and b) Staffordshire of a move to public procurement of electricity.

The Government is taking action to ensure that procurement and investment deliver benefits for communities across the UK, including promoting supply chain resilience, supporting domestic industry, and recognising social value in procurement decisions.
A move to public procurement of electricity would represent a significant change to the current market framework. It would need to be carefully assessed to understand the likely implications for costs, consumer bills, market function and investment in the energy system.
The most effective way to deliver sustained benefits to households and businesses is through the Government’s Clean Power mission, which will reduce exposure to volatile fossil fuel markets and bring down electricity costs for the long term.
