The question
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment she has made of the merits of holding a by-election for the role of Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner ahead of the abolition of that role in 2028; and what estimate she has made of the costs of doing so.

Section 51 of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 requires an election to be held to fill a vacancy in the office of Police and Crime Commissioner within 35 days of a vacancy being declared. While the government is taking steps to abolish the role of Police and Crime Commissioner, until it is abolished, the role needs to be filled. The government expects to set out successor arrangements for the oversight of policing in the forthcoming Police Reform Bill.
The costs of a Police and Crime Commissioner by-election will be met by the Government, out of the Consolidated Fund, and not by the local police force.
