Human Rights: Education
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what steps her Department is taking to promote and support the adoption of the (a) Rights Respecting Schools programme and (b) principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in schools.
Answered by Josh MacAlister
The government is committed to upholding the principles of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child and safeguarding the rights of children within schools. For example, the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act included several measures to enhance children’s rights, including strengthening the role of education in safeguarding.
We know that some schools choose to follow the UNICEF scheme ‘Rights Respecting Schools Award’, which puts children’s rights at the heart of school policy and practice, and we welcome their commitment to promoting the rights of children.
