Civil Disorder: Belfast

Asked by Adam JogeeLabourNorthern Ireland OfficeTabled Answered 23 June 2026UIN 9790

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, whether he has provided support to the Northern Ireland Executive to help ensure that people who lost their homes as a result of the violence and disorder in Belfast are rehoused.

Answered by Hilary Benn

The scenes of disorder witnessed recently damaged communities and put innocent lives at risk. There is no justification at all for this type of racist thuggery and there is no place for it in Northern Ireland.

The Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) is the Strategic Housing Authority for Northern Ireland and has a duty to assess circumstances and provide interim or permanent accommodation for qualifying homeless households. The NIHE’s main budget is allocated by the Northern Ireland Department for Communities (DfC). The Government has provided the Northern Ireland Executive with a record £19.3bn per year, on average, over the Spending Review period.
