Active Travel: Finance

Asked by Mr Richard HoldenConservativeDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 18 June 2026UIN 9719

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, with reference to her Department's policy paper entitled Active Travel – Active England: the third cycling and walking investment strategy, published on 12 June 2026, how much of the £4.555 billion represents (a) new funding announced since July 2024, (b) funding previously announced by the current Government and (c) funding announced by previous Governments.

Answered by Lilian Greenwood

The projected investment covers the period 2025-6 to 2029-30. All funding has been announced since July 2024, but prior to publication of the Strategy, with the exception of City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS) funding which was announced by a previous Government and started in 2022.

Of this CRSTS funding, £644m has been included within the CWIS3 projection due to the multi-year funding profile of the CRSTS fund which spanned the periods covered by both the Second and Third Cycling and Walking Investment Strategies.

This approach is in line with that taken for CWIS1 and CWIS2, published by the previous government.
