Ministry of Justice: Artificial Intelligence
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, whether his Department uses AI models created by Alibaba.
Answered by Jake Richards
The Ministry of Justice believes in testing, exploring and evaluating a range of AI models to ensure we understand emerging capabilities, manage potential risks, and keep pace with developments in this rapidly changing landscape. Any models used are run within secure government cloud environments, where data remains under Ministry of Justice control.
The Ministry of Justice has used the open-source model Qwen, developed by Alibaba, for targeted analytical and research activities. Qwen has not been used to make operational decisions and has not been deployed across the Department.
The Ministry of Justice only scales AI technologies where they meet our standards for governance, security, accuracy and performance. Our enterprise agreements have only been with UK and US technology providers.
