Veterans: Coroners

Asked by John CooperConservativeMinistry of DefenceTabled Answered 24 June 2026UIN 10373

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many veterans are involved in outstanding inquests.

Answered by Mr Calvin Bailey

The Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023 halted all legacy inquests relating to the Troubles in Northern Ireland from 1 May 2024. The passage of the Troubles Bill will enable a number of paused inquests to restart.

However, we await the findings in one Troubles case heard before 1 May 2024. Around 20 veterans were involved.

The Ministry of Defence also tracks other inquests, not related to Northern Ireland legacy, which involve a limited number of other veterans.
