Neighbourhood Policing
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment she has made of the relationship between neighbourhood policing levels and public confidence in the police.
Answered by Sarah Jones
Visible, local policing is essential to restoring public confidence in our police and is a key element of the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee (NPG). As part of the NPG, we will deliver 13,000 additional neighbourhood policing personnel into roles across England and Wales by the end of this Parliament.
Working collaboratively with policing, we have underpinned the NPG with a clear and wide-ranging performance framework - published in April 2025. This can be found here: Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee performance framework - GOV.UK.
Drawing on the College of Policing’s 2018 Rapid Evidence Assessment, the performance framework identifies improved public confidence as an expected outcome for the NPG. The performance framework includes confidence in police in local areas as a headline performance measure for the NPG, which will be tracked throughout the programme alongside the delivery of the additional neighbourhood policing personnel.
