The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what percentage of utility works have been inspected each of the last three years by highways authorities; and what assessment her Department has made of the potential merits of using digital inspection systems to identify damage from utilities works to the (a) road and (b) footway network.

The Department’s Street Manager digital service enables local authorities to record, monitor and co‑ordinate street works, including inspections. Use of this service is not mandatory for all types of works so the Department does not hold complete data on the percentage of utility works that are inspected by highway authorities.
The Department has not made a formal assessment of digital systems to identify damage to roads or footways. Decisions on the use of technology when carrying out inspections rest with local highway authorities.
