Maritime and Coastguard Agency: Fire and Rescue Services and Police
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Home Office, following the Court of Appeal judgment in Maritime and Coastguard Agency v Groom [2026] EWA Civ 6, what assessment she has made of the impact of service provided by the coastguard on (a) His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and (b) Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS).
Answered by Sarah Jones
His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) inspects police forces in England and Wales, and fire and rescue services in England. HM Coastguard, part of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, is not within its remit. As such, no assessment is required and no impact on HMICFRS is expected following this judgment.
