Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office: Reorganisation
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of the restructuring process on staff morale and retention.
Answered by Seema Malhotra
The Department recognises the importance of staff morale and retention, as well as continuity of delivery, throughout this process. Senior leadership are engaging regularly with staff to provide clarity and support. HR continues to meet trade unions twice weekly to share updates on workforce matters and to seek their views on emerging employee policy considerations. Trade union input is invited for consideration before decisions are taken.
Changes are being made as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is committed to becoming a smaller, more agile organisation, better equipped to deliver tangible benefits for the British people. Changes to workforce size and structure are being made strategically, in line with departmental priorities, to ensure we retain the capability required to deliver UK strength, security, and prosperity. This is not a case of spreading more work across fewer people, but of ensuring the right number of staff, with the right skills and tools, are in appropriately sized teams, focused on the highest priorities and empowered to take decisions at the right level.
The FCDO will continue to update the House on progress with the implementation of the FCDO2030 programme, as and when there are significant developments or milestones to report. Information on workforce size and composition is published through official statistics and annual reporting.
