UK Relations with EU

Asked by Mike WoodConservativeDepartment for Energy Security and Net ZeroTabled Answered 26 June 2026UIN 11137

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, pursuant to the answer of 20 May 2026, to Question 216, on UK Relations with EU, whether the UK will also be required to contribute to the EU Cohesion programme in order to participate in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

Answered by Chris McDonald

The UK is currently negotiating with the EU to link our two Emissions Trading Schemes. We are not seeking to rejoin or participate in the EU ETS. To achieve a link between the UK ETS and EU ETS, we will not be required to contribute to the EU Cohesion Programme.
