HM Coastguard: Voluntary Work

Asked by Shivani RajaConservativeDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 23 June 2026UIN 11213

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what estimate she has made of the reduction in expenditure on Coastguard Rescue Officers as a result of the introduction of the revised volunteer model; and how much the Maritime and Coastguard Agency expects to save in each of the next five financial years.

Answered by Keir Mather

Changing the CRS operating model was not something which we wanted to do, but is a mandated consequence of the Court of Appeal ruling. Serving CROs are entitled to compensation for up to the previous six years of service, in line with the Court of Appeal judgment regarding worker status. The MCA will calculate each person’s entitlement and contact individuals.
