Vehicle Number Plates

Asked by Dr Al PinkertonLiberal DemocratDepartment for TransportTabled Answered 23 June 2026UIN 11318

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what discussions her Department has had with European counterparts on vehicle registration mark security.

Answered by Simon Lightwood

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is working with a range of partners including the Home Office, on ways to improve the identification and enforcement of number plate crime.

As part of this work, the Home Office commissioned a series of questions focusing on the use of cloned and illegible number plates to European police colleagues.

The questions included requests for statistical analysis or studies on the scale of any problems present in each country, information on police responses and penalties, methods of detection and common reasons for their use.

The DVLA is also a member of the Association of European Vehicle and Driver Registration Authorities, which meets regularly and discusses all aspects of vehicle registration and driver licensing.
