Asked by James McMurdockIndependentDepartment for Science, Innovation and TechnologyTabled Answered 26 June 2026UIN 11356

The question

To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what assessment she has made of the role of VPNs in supporting a) online privacy and b) cybersecurity for i) individuals and ii) businesses.

Answered by Kanishka Narayan

The Government recognises that VPNs play an important role in keeping online networks and personal data secure, including for businesses and remote workers.

We continue to consider the evidence on VPNs collected as part of the ‘Growing up in the Online World’ consultation. The Government has been clear that any intervention must be proportionate, effective and evidence-based.
