To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, steps she is taking to ensure that online age-assurance measures do not result in excessive collection of personal data from internet users.

The Government is clear that making the UK a safer place to be online must be achieved in a way that respects users’ rights to privacy, protects personal data, and does not undermine online security.
Ofcom has agreed to launch a rapid assessment of what constitutes highly effective age assurance for establishing whether someone is over 16. This assessment will prioritise data protection in the context of age assurance.
UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act already impose obligations on data controllers – which include age verification services - to process data fairly, lawfully, and transparently.
