Slaughterhouses: Artificial Intelligence
The question
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, whether she has made an assessment of the potential merits of mandating the use of artificial intelligence in the monitoring of slaughterhouse footage.
Answered by Stephen Morgan
Since 2018 all slaughterhouses in England have been required to have CCTV recording in areas where live animals are present. As an important complement to physical observation by Official Veterinarians, CCTV helps maintain and improve animal welfare standards in slaughterhouses and provides assurance to consumers that this is the case. No assessment has been made of the use of artificial intelligence to review CCTV footage.
